Drive to Lamayoru, in ancient there was a great lake in this place. The arhat NYIMAGUNG made a prophesy saying. May a monastery be founded in this place and he then offered a votive water offering (chu- gtor ) to all the nagaserpent spirits who were the guardians of that place. The grains of corn that formed part of this offering were carried by the waves of different places along the cliff side by the edge of the lake and when they had become mixed with the earth they sprouted forth as corn in the shape of a Swastika. At the time when a monastery was later founded there it was called Yungdrung (SWASTIKA ) in the 11th century the maha siddha Naropa came to this place and the cave where he resided and meditated is still to be seen today. Then Rincen Zangpo, the Translator came and built many temples and stupas and so the teachings of the Kadampa school came to flourish greatly there. There are about 200 monks residing there today. There is a custom whereby each year on the 17 and 18th of the 5th month of Tibetan the festival of the lamayoru, so called Yungdrung Kabgyad is held during which sacred dances are performed and the ritual of hurling a votive offering is observed. In this monastery there are various shaines to be seen, including thangkas and wall paintings. Overnight : Hotel Meals : BB Elevation : 3500 m
Situated 45 km from Kargil and 260 km from Leh, the Mulbekh Monastery with its gompas stands on a peak above the Srinagar-Leh highway. The two gompas are of Drukpa (new Buddhist school) and Gelugpa (old Buddhist school). Another reason for Mulbekh Monastery’s fame is the 30 ft long limestone sculpture of Maitreya Buddha. Carved onto the rock face, the sculpture of standing Maitreya Buddha overlooks the National Highway. The rock sculpture is believed to have been carved by Ladakhi missionaries to propagate Buddhism.Though the rock sculpture represents the Maitreya Buddha, the idol is a fine blend of Saivite symbols and early Buddhist art work. The art is a pointer to the fact that the missionaries who were instrumental in carving the statue were not from Tibet. A school of thought believes the statue was built during the Kushanperiod during the first century, however, modern scholars date it around eighth century.Near the Maitreya rock idol, there are ancient edicts inscribed on the mountain in Kharoshti script (an ancient Indic script used by the Gandhara culture).
